(Un)governed Spaces. 2014 Usdan Gallery, Bennington College, Vermont (see additional project images here)
‘(Un)governed Spaces’ focuses on the Shomali Plain region in Afghanistanand the communities around the large US airbase at Bagram. This collaboration with anthropologist Noah Coburn merges images and text to create a complex portrait of the region with layers of historical research and contemporary narratives.
Paintings of a burnt out government office, the walls of the Bagram airbase, and a Hellenic vase discovered nearby each tell different stories about the region. The central piece in this project is a large painted panorama (recalling the historic cyclorama format often used to commemorate epic battles) that shows an unromantic view of the fertile valley with the military base and houses. A surround sound installation plays a loop of sounds recorded on site over 3 years; birdsong, interview selections, sonic boom from jets overhead, and military vehicles passing through the town.

Highway. 2013 Flashpoint Gallery, Washington, DC (see additional project images here)
In “Highway,” I developed a series of hyper-realistic drawings to chronicle the modern transformation of the Grand Trunk Road in India. Part of one of Asia’s ancient trade routes, the section of the road connecting Delhi and Kolkata was renovated during a national infrastructure campaign. This project offers a nuanced examination of the road and merges images with oral histories to create a rich and layered experience.
